BP to increase production capacity of PTA at BP Zhuhai Chemical
BP has announced a strategic plan for its substantial development in China. It is actively proceeding with its project to increase its production capacity of purified terephthalic acid, or PTA, at the BP Zhuhai Chemical Company Limited facility in Guangdong, China.
BP also announced plans to build another US$600 million world-scale PTA plant at the same site. With an annual capacity of 1.25 million tons, this will soon be the first plant to employ BP's latest generation PTA technology. PTA is the raw material used to manufacture polyethylene terephthalate, a polyester polymer widely used in the production of textiles, bottles, packaging, and film products. As a major producer and exporter of textiles, China's textile and polymer industries are experiencing rapid growth, the company said.
In order to increase domestic supply as well as provide adequate and competitive raw materials for southern China's polyester and textile industries, BP Zhuhai plans to expand the annual capacity of its second plant to 1.7 million tons after it begins operating in the first quarter of 2012. In addition, a third PTA plant in Zhuhai, currently under pre-engineering planning is expected to be completed in 2014
With a capacity of 1.25 million tons per year, this new plant will be the first to employ BP's latest generation technology and become the world's largest single train PTA plant. The annual capability of BP Zhuhai will reach 2.95 million tons, making it the largest and lowest-cost PTA site in BP's global PTA system.
Recently, BP Zhuhai submitted the new plant's plan to the National Development and Reform Commission for approval. The advanced technology to be deployed in the new plant can further reduce negative environmental impacts, thereby helping China to deliver its commitments in terms of environmental protection and energy consumption, the company added.
