Cotton imports set to resume (Egyp)
The Egyptian government is likely to issue permits this autumn to allow cotton imports into the country to resume again to offset a fall in local production of the raw fibre.
An update from the US Department of Agriculture's Cairo office said the move would "bridge a gap between the expected decline in production and the expected increase in domestic consumption."
The government introduced a ban on cotton imports into Egypt last October. However, while the import ban was officially lifted on 18 March this year, imports have effectively remained blocked because no import permits have been granted.
In the 2012-13 marketing year, which starts in August, cotton imports into Egypt are expected to jump 77% to 530,000 bales, up from 300,000 bales the previous year.
The total area planted is expected to fall by 45% in 2012/13, which will lead to a drop in production to 430,000 bales. Exports are expected to drop to 360,000 bales, the USDA bureau said.
