African ministers to discuss future of cotton industry (Zimbabwe)

Agricultural Ministers of three African countries – Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi – are likely to meet soon to discuss ways to expand the cotton industry.

 

The Ministers are also expected to discuss how best their Governments could protect the interest of cotton growers.

 

The decision for a meeting of the ministers from the three countries was taken when the three met on the sidelines of the opening of the Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Show.

 

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Agriculture, Mechanization and Irrigation Development Joseph Made shared his thoughts with his Zambian and Malawian counterparts Emmanuel Chenda and Peter Mwanza.

 

The three ministers realized that their countries faced similar challenges over cotton prices as buyers in their countries were offering between US$ 0.30 and US$ 0.35 per kg of cotton seed.

 

Moreover, common companies were found to be operating in all the three countries.

 

The three Ministers have agreed to meet and discuss the future of cotton production and to find ways to expand the cotton sector in their countries, Mr. Made said.
