Demand For Bangladesh's Home Textile Goods Rising In International Mkts
Country's home textile mill owners have taken a move for a major expansion of their units to grab a big portion of international market.
Industries insiders said demand for Bangladeshi home textiles have been increasing in the global market thanks to production shortfall in two major home textile producers -- China and Pakistan.
"With a view to meeting the increasing demand for home textile goods in the international market, the country's most mill owners have been going for a massive expansion," president of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) Jahangir Alamin told the FE on Wednesday.
He also said many buyers are shifting their import orders from China, Pakistan and other countries to Bangladesh due to higher production cost in those countries.
Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data show Bangladeshi home textile exporters export home textiles including bed sheets, bed covers, pillow covers, cushions, curtains, rugs, quilt, kitchen aprons, gloves, napkins and table cloths.
Manager of Unilliance Textiles Ltd Sabbir Ahmad told the FE that their company is going to double production capacity as the demand has increased from the buyers' end recently.
Chairman of Purbani Group, Abdul Hai Sarker told the FE that demand for country's home textiles is now growing more to new markets, so export earningss from the home textiles may cross $2.0 billion in the next three years as buyers are shifting to Bangladesh from key exporting countries like China and Pakistan.
He said many new buyers are coming here and the country's home textiles export is increasing to new markets due mainly to low cost of production.
Country's home textile goods have are being exported mainly to EU countries, the UK, USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Japan and Dubai.
Board of Investment (BOI) data show a total of 1,457 fresh investment proposals were registered from the local investors in the last fiscal year (2012-13) and most of them had shown their interest in investing in textile sector.
It's also learnt that a total of 523 industrial units for textile sector got registered with an investment worth Tk 172 billion.
The state-run EPB data shows that during the period of July-September in the current fiscal the country exported home textiles worth $179.28 million.
